As the new season begins, Shaun Hannah starts his 12th year behind the bench of the Pioneer men's ice hockey team. After record setting seasons in 2005-06, and 2006-07, including his 11th consecutive postseason playoff berth, Hannah will once again seek to lead the Pioneers to an Atlantic Hockey Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The Pioneers have qualified for the Atlantic Hockey Playoffs in each year of the league's existence. Hannah guided the team to the AHA Championship game in 2004 before falling to Holy Cross. Last year under his guidance, Sacred Heart posted a school record 21 regular season wins, including a record 18 victories in conference play.
Hannah was named the 1999-00 MAAC Coach of the Year after leading the Pioneers to a 16-win season, an improvement of nine wins over the previous year. Hannah was also among the finalists for the Spencer T. Penrose Award, which is awarded to the NCAA Division I Coach of the Year.
Hannah played for Cornell from 1990-94. He was named team captain as a senior for the 1993-94 season. For his hard work over those four years he was awarded the Joe DeLibero/Stan Tsapis Award. Hannah graduated in 1994 with a B.S. in Business Management.
Hannah was a member of the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League at the tail end of the 1994-95 season. In 1995-96 he played for the Knoxville Cherokees of the East Coast Hockey League, scoring six goals and 22 assists for 28 points. He also appeared in eight playoff games that season, scoring one goal.
A native of Mankota, Saskatchewan, Hannah now resides in Stratford, Connecticut, with his wife Amy.
