Game #2 - SHU 54 - La Salle 14 - Post Game Notes
The Pioneers are 2-0 to start a season for the first time since 2003. The win matches the Pioneers win total from last season (2-9).
SHU's 54 points are their most points scored in a game since a 53-45 win at home over Saint Francis (PA) on October 29, 2005.
The combined 95 points over the first two-games is the most points scored in the first two games of a season all-time. The next highest total is 85, scored over the first two games of the 2001 season: W, 41-21 at Central Connecticut, W, 44-31 at Robert Morris.
Saturday marked the second straight game the Pioneers have piled up over 450 yards of total offense (75 plays - 501 yards). The 501 yards is the sixth highest total in program history for a single game.
For the second-straight week the Pioneer offense picked up 26 first downs and was better then 60% on third down (8-of-12). The SHU offensive unit is yet to turn the ball over in 2007 while the first-team unit is yet to yield a sack.
Redshirt-Freshman Dale Fink continued his hot start, completing eight-of-nine for 122 and three scores. Fink is 24-of-34 for 360 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions through the first two games.
The Evin Jones-Jason Payne running back tandem continues to pay off for Sacred Heart. The duo combined for 125 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns. Jones had his first career two-touchdown game. He had two career scores rushing heading into Saturday's game.
Junior Ed Gurrieri led all rushers with a career high 83 yards on 20 carries while scoring his first career touchdown.
The Pioneers scored their first defensive touchdown since the 2004 season in the win. Senior safety John Wilson's 54-yard interception return for a touchdown marked the first SHU defensive touchdown since a Mike Scott 27 yard fumble return for a score against Stony Brook on October 30, 2004 (W, 38-35). Scott is currently in his third season as the running backs coach at Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart kicker Joe Schroeder hit six-of-seven on his extra point attempts, his two misses coming in the first half.
Saturday's game marked the Pioneer football debut on WICC 600 AM. The voice of the Pioneers Jeff Holts and Assistant Athletic Director Gene Gumbs called all the action.
