Final Stats

NEW ORLEANS, LA - Anthony Scelfo had three of Tulane University's 14 hits and ace hurler Shooter Hunt allowed just two hits and struck out eight in five innings, as the Green Wave defeated the Pioneers 8-0 Friday night.

"You have to tip your hat," said SHU head coach Nick Giaquinto. "Those guys came out and showed us something we probably haven't seen this season - especially Shooter. He did a heck of a job. He's got a fastball that he brings in the low to mid 90s and then he's got a nice breaking ball. He had us kind of confused a little bit."

The Pioneers got a leadoff double by sophomore Justin Mulrain but were unable to push a run across as Hunt struck out a pair to escape the first inning. The Green Wave scored one in the bottom of the inning off SHU starter Ryan Lynch on a sacrifice fly by Warren McFadden, scoring Scott Powell who had led of the frame with a single.

SHU got another double in the second when Matt Fitton blooped a ball to shallow left and hustled into second when the ball fell between the third baseman and left fielder. Hunt struck out Phil Tantillo to end the inning and strand Fitton.

Tulane, 14-6, opened up a 4-0 lead in the second on three hits. Sam Honeck and Seth Henry led off the inning with singles. Powell hit a grounder to third that forced Honeck. Henry and Powell then executed a double steal. Henry scored on a balk by Lynch, and Powell crossed the plate on an RBI triple by Scelfo. Tulane catcher Jared Dyer completed the scoring when he drove home Scelfo with a grounder to third.

Lynch surrendered his fifth run of the game on a two-out RBI single by Dyer that scored Powell who had stroked a one-out double to left.

The Green Wave knocked Lynch out with two outs in the fifth inning after a triple by Henry had scored two more to make it 7-0. Chris Zaccherio came out of the bullpen and got the final out of the inning.

Tulane plated its final tun in the sixth on a pair of hits, but Zaccherio pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two, and Chris Barthel pitched a scoreless eighth.

"We played solid defense tonight," said Giaquinto. Our pitchers have to be a little more aggressive. At the plate, we didn't get the money hit. We came up a little bit short when needed to, but we're a young squad and we're just going to keep plugging away."
